about

Pittsburgh. Absurdity, theatrics, and real emotion. We just riffed for a while. Of course, we couldn’t abandon all of it. Those nights ended at Ritters in crude American spectacle. The caliber of observation was high. We used to catch local stand-up comics in there gathering new material. Our favorite recurring conversation always ended up being an epilogue for the evening. We’d have only opened our eyes in some blunder of a Midwest destination. Being on the brink of adulthood made us feel too old to skip town and drive hundreds of miles. On the other hand, it gave me good reason to show up next Thursday to play something new and wild.

Review by Scott Yanow, jazz historian/author

"His three-song EP Hilarious & Serious lives up to its title. Nick Natalie is joined by guitarist Mike Borowski, bassist Chris Skelly, and drummer David Landes for a colorful program of original music. The set begins with “Moriarty In Denver,” a rhythmic piece with an eccentric melody and plenty of passion. The guitar, tenor and bass solos over the groove build upon each other’s ideas and the four musicians constantly interact with each other. “Afternoons” starts with an intense rockish groove and includes some pretty wild playing, particularly from Borowski and Natalie. The EP ends with “Withdrawn,” a mournful piece that has the leader repeating a solemn line over the atmospheric backing."
